Enduro was an event that some say was invented by the Legendary Berold de Gilbert, a figure whose very existence is debated hotly in ivy covered halls. Some say he was a mighty warrior, a viscount or a knight of ages gone by. Some say he was a herald, coated in rusty chain mail. Some say he was a lover, not a fighter, and that the string of torn flesh in his wake was not broken bodies, but rather broken hearts.
Regardless of whether this legendary giant ever actually walked the earth, the idea attributed to him is a fun one. Sometime, back in the mists of history, someone in the southernmost reaches of civilization envisioned a game wherein those who were literate and lively could ply their talents to win the day. The idea was simple: Form a team, walk a course, solve puzzles, fight where necessary (or fun), and if all goes well, the team with the best knowledge of the subject matter and the best wits will win the day. Set this in a beautiful, densely wooded area, and voila. The perfect way to spend a weekend with friends.
Was this "Berold" a real person? Or is he just a myth, best relegated to the same space in our imaginations as Bigfoot, the Yeti, and a White Scarf that can actually fight? We, the Autocrats of Enduro North 2: Dante's Enduro choose to believe that this Berold de Gilbert WAS a real person, that he really IS the person who invented the Enduro Quest in the Kingdom of the Outlands, lo those many years ago. Does that make us foolish? Maybe. But sometimes, believing in a mythical figure is enough to lend that touch of reverence that will make the event just a little more magical for everyone else.
